Why Unity Matters

Understanding why Unity Bay Foundation is essential to the Mobile Bay LGBTQ+ community is vital for supporting our ongoing work.

In the deep south, LGBTQ people are too often isolated, underserved, or made invisible, Unity Bay exists to build something lasting: connection, safety, pride, and shared power.

Mobile has long lacked a dedicated LGBTQ community center, while many queer people still face rejection from shelters, rehab programs, faith spaces, and even their own families. The Human Rights Campaign has repeatedly ranked Mobile among the lowest-scoring cities in the nation for LGBTQ inclusion and protections. Unity Bay was created because our community deserves more than survival — we deserve belonging, opportunity, visibility, and a future.

Unity Bay is about taking care of our own.

We exist to:

  • Create real community and reduce isolation
  • Unite existing LGBTQ groups, leaders, and generations
  • Organize social events, mutual aid, and civic projects
  • Develop partnerships with others orgs and businesses to create and define queer-friendly spaces
  • Empower queer people through leadership, creativity, and service
  • Beautify Mobile through public-facing projects such as gardens, art, housing rehab, and volunteerism to remind our neighbors of the love and beauty that the LGBTQ+ community brings to our city.
  • Build networks of practical support during crisis
  • Advocate for dignity, equity, housing, healthcare, and inclusion
  • Raise funds toward a permanent brick-and-mortar LGBTQ community center and crisis housing
  • Preserve queer history while building the next generation of leadership

Most of all, Unity Bay exists to remind LGBTQ people in the Deep South that we are not alone — and that together, we can create the kind of community we have always needed.
